A Message to Everyone from 1964 Co-Chairs: Maggie (Vestal) Owen & Roger Dickerson
It has been our great pleasure to Co-Chair our ’64 Class 50th Reunion. We had the opportunity to work with talented classmates who devoted time and caring on our Steering Committee to make this event happen. Each of the committee members played important roles, with both past reunion activities as well as our recent event. It’s a group which democratically considered many points of view and worked together in a spirit of true cooperation.
Based on all the feedback from our classmates, our class 50th was a real success and enjoyed by all. It was a great party venue that nicely accommodated our attendance. A plus was the music by our friend Phil Jay, who held a “Twist” dance contest, providing additional fun. The barbeque dinner by Hayward’s (under new ownership) was hot and tasty, and Chris Wilborn took the class photo which came out great (as it did in October!). We all saw friends who hadn’t attended in October, in addition to some who had never been with us before.
Thanks to the many who traveled to attend the July reunion party. Some of the more distant ones: Bob DeMasters and Steve Wood from Denver, Linda (McCauley) Thompson from near St. Louis, Barb (Knecht) Kreutzer from Garden City and those who traveled the farthest: Val (Anderson) Marker & Fr. Pat Wilson from South Florida, Dottie (Caylor) Smith from California, Sherri (Corder) O’Neill from Albuquerque, and Dave Stryker from Sun City, Arizona. Another tribute to those who could not attend but who sent regrets: Biff Taylor, Bob Rea, Kathie (Lair) Chambers, Lynn (Ashley) Henderson, Susie (Deeg) McClocklin, Tom Smith, Bob Cecil, Rod Anderson, Bruce Clayton, Jean Kaye (Jennings) Cook, Rusty Davis, Karen (Metcalf) Callaghan, Susan (Campbell) Lepore and Steve Renz.
Great appreciation goes to those who have from time to time made cash or “in kind” donations to promote our reunion parties or picnic activities. You know who you are. We couldn’t have succeeded without your support. Thank you!
OUR SPECIAL JOURNEY
We have long felt that our class is most special and has always been unusually close. We share the feeling of many that this closeness and long term friendships came about for 2 primary reasons: (1) the quality, sincerity and great friendliness of the people and, (2) our common history from pre-high school years – we were the generation who went to different junior highs, two different high schools during our sophomore years and when we completed our journey, we were finally home at SM West. A great testament about the quality, sincerity and friendliness of our class is Alice (Burns) Thomas from St. Louis who attended only her 7th grade year at Milburn and her 8th grade year at Broadmoor with some of us, but she traveled to both our October reunion and our class 50th.
A REWARDING EXPERIENCE
One of the greatest rewards of being involved with our reunion activities is really getting to know people with whom we were marginally acquainted during our busy high school years. As we have gotten older, it has been refreshing to find that our classmates are people of depth, fun, value, and youthful outlooks. Many former acquaintances have become valued friendships and we reconnected again with some long-ago friends from high school.
KEEP IN TOUCH
Though our class 50th year reunion is over, we believe that our class website is an invaluable communication hub allowing all of us to find or stay in touch with each other. Our steering committee has subscribed to support our website for a number of years. Thanks again to Shirley (Wehr) Quastler for being the guiding light on that. Please check it periodically (www.SMWest63-64.com) to update any of your information that has changed, to send messages to classmate friends, to notify us of classmate deaths, and BE SURE to check it for future class activities!
