Dear Kathie,

I wanted to extend my condolences to you concerning your loss of Wes.  Wes and I met in the summer of 1963 as he moved to Nall Hills from Oklahoma as I remember due to his family’s transfer. I think it was through Flip Shoemaker because Flip lived in Nall Hills too.

Wes and I became friends and since I did not have a car Wes volunteered to drive me to school each morning.  He had a Metropolitan which is a very small car and he would arrive at my house promptly at ten minutes to eight every morning.  He was never late.  He was always a grounded and sensible person.

One of Wes’ disappointments was that he wanted to play basketball on the school’s varsity team that fall of 1963.  It was Coach Henry who had been my geometry teacher at SM East two years prior that informed him that due to Sunflower League rules he would be ineligible to play due to his recent transfer.

We did not have any classes together and the last time I saw Wes in the fall of 1964. I was going to KU and he stopped by the residence hall to proudly show me his new Chevy that he had just purchased.

I think we visited for 10-15 minutes.

I hope this note finds you well.
